Offset print by Jalal Toufic. 54 film stills with close-ups of the face of a woman re-enacting the interrogation and torture of Joan of Arc. Below a sentence from the Koran: Each Thing is perishing except HIS face

The Passion of Joan Arc shows a motif from Jalal Toufic’s film poster series Minor Art: Conceptual Film and Video Posters (2000-05) consisting of 18 prints that refer to well-known film classics, which he has varied in a complex and irritating way. In this case, the classic silent film of the same name by Carl Dreyer from 1928 provides the motif, when the interrogation and torture of Joan of Arc are traced in close-ups of the main actress Maria Falconetti’s face. Toufic added a sentence from the Koran to the poster, which shows 54 individual images of Falconetti’s face: “Each Thing is perishing except HIS face” (Qur’ān 28:88).
