Like Jelena Tomašević’s paintings, this untitled screen print also tells of the existential loneliness and alienation of the individual and the sexes in our competitive consumer society. The scene is depicted realistically and yet is dreamlike and surreal: in the lower left corner of the picture, a woman in an elegant dress and heels lies huddled on the floor, one hand protectively over her head, while a man in a suit and tie with a briefcase stands uninvolved in front of a row of houses in the upper right corner. An image of powerlessness, indifference, apathy and emotional emptiness – the “social disease” of patriarchal, capitalist society is humorously and brutally presented here through stereotypical images of masculinity and femininity.
