Print by Edi Hila. Reproduction of a painting in dark colors. A policeman on a small boat looks searchingly into the water, outlined in black. Below it is written PROMENADE

With his distinctive painting style and a reduced colour palette, Edi Hila has evolved since the end of the Hoxha regime into a chronicler of Albania’s socio-political transformation. He often works in series, as in Martyrs of the Nation Boulevard (2015). The two-colour offset print is based on an acrylic painting on canvas from 2003. It shows a uniformed border policeman in an inflatable boat on a night patrol, scanning the opaque water’s surface, while the upper left section of the image is “darkened” by an abstract black cloud of paint.
