Schwarzer Humor is K.H. Hödicke’s contribution to the roll-cabinet edition En Bloc (EB20). It consists of a piece of tar paper, shaped like a heart and sized to fit the cabinet drawer, coated with additional tar and placed on a cushion of wood wool filling the entire drawer. The edition is a variation on his earlier work_ Aktionsobjekt (Stelzen und Teerherz)_ (1969) – a 122 cm wide tar paper heart that could be carried in front of the body like a protective shield. Between 1969 and 1972, Hödicke repeatedly worked with tar; his installation Kalter Fluss (1969) remains among his best-known works from this period.
