S.E.M. Ensemble – Petr Kotik – John Cage

Around the same time that Luigi Russolo published his futurist manifesto L’arte dei rumori and built the musical instruments known as Intonarumori, Marcel Duchamp conceived two compositions based on the principle of chance. The pieces therefore have no fixed scores but have to be composed anew each time. The process of composing, the emergence of the later sound image, is therefore of great importance. This is something that is also at the forefront of many later compositions by Fluxus artists.
For this recording, the S.E.M. Ensemble, under the direction of Petr Kotik and with the advice of John Cage, realized and performed the works.
John Cage speaks his Mesostic Sculpture Musicale.
The CD was produced in collaboration with the Paula Cooper Gallery New York.
