For the Abschiedssymphonie (Farewell Symphony, Op. 177), Henning Christiansen used parts of the sound recording of a concert on three pianos with Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik and Henning Christiansen on the eve of the Biennale des Friedens in Hamburg on November 29, 1985. The composer added further material to the recording. It was completed in 1988. During the concert, Joseph Beuys, who had joined the performance from Düsseldorf due to a serious illness, spoke a sentence over the telephone that was understood as one of the artist’s last messages to his friends and was captured on the cover of the LP. Beuys died a few weeks after this memorable concert. The cover depicts the text in dark green letters on a white background.
