Sunah Choi created two new works for her first solo exhibition at Edition Block 2020: Camou and Karo. The series of seven photograms (in an edition of ten each) entitled Camou are multi-layered “photographs without a camera”. Three to four transparent foils painted with abstract structures and superimposed on photographic paper were exposed to light, creating collages of light in different shades of gray. The patterns are reminiscent of camouflage fabrics and are also inspired by them: As for other works, Choi has created extensive archives of different designs for this, continuing her ongoing investigation into the physical manifestations of cultural phenomena. The camouflage pattern is a symbiosis of abstract design and imitation nature, something that the artist continues to pursue in her work with analog means and minimalist reduction.
