    The ambivalence of human nature is the major theme of Mariana Vassileva’s multimedia work, which includes photography, film, sculptural objects and installations. Her works are characterized by both precise analysis and emotional empathy. The object The Origin of Ending consists of many intact white eggshells that have been joined together to form a mushroom-shaped structure in which a mushroom cloud is easily recognizable. The symbol of fertility and the origin of all life thus mutates into an image of its ultimate end – the nuclear catastrophe. The fragile organic object is presented under a rectangular glass cover on a metal frame.
    “As a teenager, I went to the dentist for a front tooth. When he was finished, I asked: ‘And … is the tooth stable now?’ He said: ‘Yes, it’s stable … just like an egg’. There are certain phrases that stay with me and I have to think about them again and again at different stages of my life. (…)”1
