Mike Parr’s work is essentially autobiographical and organized in series. In his uncompromising performances, he explores the limits of his mental and physical abilities. Parr continues this exploration of his own subjectivity and the coherence of his self-image in his decades-long project of self-portraits, producing thousands of studies. For the graphic portfolio Aus Australien (EB57), Parr created the five etchings and aquatints The Pool of Blood (I–V), a series of larger-than-life, anamorphic self-portraits characterized by analytical clarity and expressive gestures.
