Multiple by Gerhard Richter. Small black wooden box with a b/w photo of his studio staircase on the bottom. In the box, 3 glass panes are mounted on top of each other. There is a small steel ball on each level.

Kugelobjekt I (Sphere Object I) is Gerhard Richter’s contribution to the limited editioned rolling cabinet En Bloc (EB20). Three glass panes are mounted in a black wooden box in such a way that three separate levels are created. Small steel balls of various sizes can roll freely around on each of these levels. Attached to the bottom of the box is a photograph taken by Richter of the staircase leading to his first Düsseldorf studio at Fürstenwall 204. While the motif of his graphic Atelier (EB91) shows the exterior of this building, Kugelobjekt I is a photograph of a staircase inside. In the same year, the edition Kugelobjekt II was created for the Heiner Friedrich Gallery in Munich. The boxes are signed and numbered on the back and marked with an “I.” According to Hubertus Butin’s catalog raisonné of Gerhard Richter’s editions, some copies of Kugelobjekt I contain the photograph from Kugelobjekt II with a slightly altered section of the staircase, as they were accidentally mixed up when signed.1
