For the special edition of the publication Grafik des Kapitalistischen Realismus (EB31), Gerhard Richter realized the offset print Selbstbildnis (Self-Portrait). The small-format motif (9.5 × 7.3 cm) shows a photograph taken by Gerhard Richter of the Skulptur für einen Raum von Palermo (Richter) (Sculpture for a Room by Palermo (Richter)) from the same year, a plaster bust of the artist painted in gray paint on a narrow, high pedestal. Together with its counterpart – Palermo’s head cast in plaster – the sculpture was part of Richter’s installation Zwei Skulpturen für einen Raum von Palermo (Two Sculptures for a Room by Palermo), which was exhibited in 1971 at the Galerie Heiner Friedrich in Cologne together with a wall painting by Palermo.
